Teacher Writes "Loser" on 6th Grade Student's Paper

Post by Morning Glory

North Carolina teacher Rex Roland isn't going to get an apple from 11-year-old Heather Clement. That's because Roland has written the word "Loser" on her graded assignments more than once.

In November, Heather's mom Patty complained to Enka Middle School Principal Pam Fourtenbary when her daughter's assignment came back with the word "loser" written on it in red ink. Ms. Clement told NECN the principal said she would "put a stop to it."

Clement was outraged when a recent assignment came back with the words "-20% for being a LOSER" written at the top. Roland apologized, and the Buncombe County School District says this is a personnel matter they won't comment on.

Clement says that's not good enough. She's removed her daughter from Roland's class and wants him suspended.

Many parents and former students defend Roland. But none of them have gone on record with the media. They say "loser" is a joking term the teacher uses for good grades and bad.

Clement isn't the only one upset over Roland's actions, though. An online petition is circulating, asking that Buncombe County School District Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin fire Roland.

Unfortunately, the story doesn't end there. WLOS reported other students started bullying Heather the morning after the news story aired on TV and, by the end of the day, the girl had received almost 100 threatening text messages.

There's a line between unconventional teaching methods and downright abuse of your position. Most teachers know that.

Because of this one teacher, this 6th grader is being subjected to even more abuse from her peers and other parents who defend him. She is the victim.

Imagine if a stranger walked up to your child and called her a loser. Now let someone call your child a loser who's someone you've entrusted your child with, who's supposed to be educating your child. My hope is Patty Clement's fight for her daughter to have an education that doesn't include destructive, degrading teaching methods is what Heather remembers most out of this whole mess that could have been avoided.

What do you think of Rex Roland's teaching methods?
